Managing Changes to the Database Across the Project Life Cycle
One of the benefits of using for website development a Content Management System with a flexible content structure, such as is eZPublish, is that changes to the content architecture can be done at any time via the graphical Administration Interface, both during the design and implementation phase as well as after the initial go-live.
This insures a tremendous level of flexibility and gives a definite increase to the speed of development, as Analysts and DBAs are not needed any more to design complex database schemas. It also poses challenges when the project under development is adopting Continuous Integration or Automated Testing / Test Driven Development practices, is undertaken by large distributed teams, or has a strict revision control policy.
In this talk, we will discuss the different practices currently adopted by eZPublish developers to share-while-evolving the CMS database, tackling the different aspects involved (db schema vs. sample contents vs. production contents) and the different development phases (development vs. maintenance).
The Kaliop Migrations Bundle, will be introduced as current best-in-breed solution to automate changes after the go-live of a site. It is an an open-source plugin for eZPublish, developed by Kaliop, based on the principles introduced by the Doctrine Migrations Bundle, which makes it easy to define changes to the the CMS contents via a simple Domain Specific Language based on Yaml syntax.
Gaetano Giunta, CTO Kaliop UK
Gaetano has been writing code for 72% of his life. 45% of that code was PHP. Knowing that he compiled his first PHP version on SCO Openserver, can you tell how many bugs he has created in his life? When not spending time on his main hobby (coding), he works as a web architect. You can usually find him in London in any pub where there is an IT meetup and free beer.
